Although the emphasis in science curricula is often on the history of ideas and the formalized rules that have resulted, real science is an ongoing work of wonderfully adventurous speculation. It’s risky, intense and full of mistakes that sometimes lead in new directions. To “do” science one needs to observe, wonder, hypothesize, test out ideas, figure out why those ideas did or did not work, and then do it all over again. Some of the greatest learning comes from refining one’s understanding in that “do it all over again” stage.
