Immunologists know that children build healthy resistance, in part, by dangers posed to the immune system. Studies continue to find that some exposure to infectious agents and bacteria in childhood actually helps to mature the immune system. This supports the rationale behind what has been called the “hygiene hypothesis,” which explains why children raised in a very clean environment with little exposure to pets, other children and the accompanying germs are more likely to develop allergies or other autoimmune disorders than children raised in less hygienic environments.
