Schoolwork repeatedly emphasizes skill areas that are lacking, or goes over skills already mastered with stultifying repetition. The brain and body seek novelty when an experience is deadening, but a child’s attempts to enliven the day by talking to a friend, tapping on the desk, or getting up too often are reframed as behavior problems. Even the child’s natural inclination to seek collaboration is defined as cheating.
