Our drive to play is hugely important. Playing has a pivotal role in increasing our ability to adapt both in general terms and to changing environmental and atmospheric conditions in particular. A major reason why we have not become extinct is that we play. The psychologist Lorenz (1972) said that we have become ‘specialists in non-specialisation’ because we play; and that because of that we are good at lots of things rather than expert at just a few.
