It is a natural expression of the bond between parent and child that we do not want our children to come to harm, to experience pain or fear. But herein lies a dilemma. Should we adults be there at all when children play, and if the answer is yes, we cannot avoid the question ‘For how long?’. How long do we expect this to go on for? Until our children are ten, fifteen, twenty-five?
