Children are not born with solutions to the puzzles or problems they encounter. Solutions are frequently arrived at through a process of trial, error and elimination. But this process can be greatly speeded up if the child has a large reservoir of information, which if always being accessed and creatively used, might result in a large but up-to-date reservoir of unused but possible combinations of solutions to new problems. In other words, the more a child plays in a diverse and novel environment, the better she will be at performing those complex combinatorial tasks, and solving the puzzles and problems essential to her continued adaptation and development.
