Quote

In Hughes (1996a) I described communication play as the way we access vocabulary, nuance, fun and rude words and dual meanings. Sometimes we forget that language itself is not just words, it is the meaning of those words in different contexts and with certain emphases….communication is not just about the spoken word but includes body posture and metacommunication too. In my experience, children are not conscious of the meaning of many words until they are made conscious either by the reaction those words get when they are used, or by the reaction they get from others when they use them.
