Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development, first published in the 1950s, identify 8 stages that a healthy individual should pass through during development from infancy to adulthood. This theory has had a significant impact worldwide and offers a helpful framework, but there are criticisms. For example, some critics argue the theory primarily describes European American males, pays more attention to the early years than adult life, and lacks academic precision.
