Big body play in particular helps children become aware of their bodies. They often push themselves to their limits until they have to stop to rest. They breathe heavily, and their hearts beat fast. They can often feel the strain in their leg muscles. This is especially true with roughhousing, where children also become aware of their bodies as they come into contact with other bodies and with the ground. It may seem wild or out of control, but it is very focused in the same way that yoga helps focus attention to one’s own body (Nancy Boler, pers. comm.).
