Because toddlers are mostly focused on the power of their movements, there is little subtlety in their play. They run, grab, and crash with abandon. Toddlers can also learn about gentle touches during this time, but they need a focus. Too often we use the phrase “gentle touches” when a toddler is using anything but a gentle touch: pulling the cat’s tail, hitting another child, and so on. Toddlers need to hear the phrase “gentle touch” while they are truly using one. This allows them to understand what adults mean by the phrase. As toddlers develop impulse control, they can use a gentle touch with a verbal reminder.
