The National Academy of Education Commission on Reading has declared that reading aloud to children is the “single most important activity” for ensuring success in learning to read. But it turns out that certain kinds of book reading are far more effective than others for promoting vocabulary development and emergent literacy. Just reading to a child is not enough. Asking the child to consider alternative outcomes, relate what’s on the page to his own experiences, and talk about the sounds and the letters encountered is much more effective than just plain reading aloud. This type of reading is called dialogic reading.
