Why do children have trouble with letter orientation, confusing b’s and d’s and p’s and g’s, even after they start school? It’s because letters are the only concept where orientation matters. Think about it. You are you whether you are seen from the left or the right or even from upside down. Same thing with objects in the world. In fact, we learn to ignore object orientation or we wouldn’t be able to recognize an object if were turned on its side. And then come letters, and suddenly orientation matters; whether the bulb of the b is on the right or the left to make it a d is unexpectedly worth noting. It takes a while for children to figure this out.
