Our words are made up of sounds, sounds even smaller than syllables, called phonemes. And these phonemes are the bits of sounds that connect with the letters of the alphabet. (To complicate matters, there are 40 phonemes in our language, including the “ch” and “sh,” and only 26 letters. Ah, well.) Children spend a lot of time trying to play with language and to isolate these phonemes. But they are not very good at it until they are 4 or 5 years of age.
