We learn to be social by moving through an ever-widening set of relationships, comparable to a set of concentric circles. Inside the first circle, babies begin to distinguish people from other objects. In the second circle, which surrounds the first, babies become aware of and then share the emotions of others. Finally, in the next circle, babies come to appreciate that others think differently and have different perspectives from theirs.
