Pattern-seeking children must…have something to bring their pattern-seeking skills to. If they are in environments rich in print, they uncover the features of writing a lot sooner than if they are not. If they are read to and are exposed to written materials, they figure out many things about books, letters, and writing before they even come to school. This is emergent literacy.
