Babies figure out that people need to be appealed to through communication to get them to do what you want, but objects just need to be manipulated. The roots of the distinction between the living things and objects that fill a baby’s world are present very early. Even by 3 months of age, babies can tell the difference between how objects (cars, trucks) and living things (people, animals) move.
