Does Project Based Art Foster Following Directions?

Product art is often touted as a great way to teach kids how to follow directions. In reality, the main things it teaches is that they can’t do it as well as the teacher (and sometimes other peers)and that creativity is not welcome. Making that fish for “F” week or that “cute” bear craft during bear week is not how they are going to learn how to follow directions. It might very well be how they lose self-confidence, esteem and expression though. Want to encourage children’s executive function abilities like following directions to grow? Let them play!!!
