DIY | Pool Noodle Finger Pops

Return with me, if you will, to the wide collared and feathered hair days of 1979 when a young Jeff first saw this commercial–probably on a black and white television:

Pop go the finger pops

I was amazed and befuddled by these magical items. I had to have them. Then in 1981, they came out with this:

That kid has the exact expression I must have had when I first saw this toy. It was a simpler time.

I don’t have a DIY idea for a popper gun and ammo belt, but here’s a quick way to make your own finger poppers from pool noodles.

Supplies

Make Some Pops

Start with a hunk of pool noodle.

Slice off a section one-and-a-half to two inches long.

Then use a pair of scissors to snip the slice into five or six sections.

Now, make a bunch more.

How To Pop

To pop a finger pop, just hold it between your thumb and index finger and squeeze. Demonstrate for kids a few times and, with varying amounts of practice, they’ll figure it out.

Challenge your popping skills by trying different fingers.

Need more play ideas? Check out the above video. Those 1979 kids had some great ideas.

Supervise Appropriately

The small slices you create are potential choking hazards, so know the children playing and supervise accordingly. No reason to worry or fret, just keep an attentive eye on kids as they play–especially kids with a history of mouthing toys.

How’d It Go?

If you give this DIY project a try, I’d love to hear how it went, or see pictures, in the comments section.
