About David Elkind
David Elkind (1931-) is an American child psychologist, speaker, and author. His work expands on Jean Piaget’s, especially focusing on the healthy cognitive and social development of young adolescents. His work has also “included the effects of stress and the importance of creative, spontaneous play for healthy development and academic learning” (Play and Playground Encyclopedia, 2012).
David Elkind is best known throughout the early learning community for the following books:
- The Hurried Child–Explores the dangers of forcing children to grow up too fast through pushed-down curriculum and media exposure
- The Power of Play–Looks at the ways spontaneous play supports cognitive and social development
- Miseducation: Preschoolers at Risk–Similar to The Hurried Child, but specifically focuses on the concerns of creating the preschool “superkid”
- Giants in the Nursery–Reexamines the work of historical pioneers in child development to create a biographical history of developmentally appropriate practice.
