In a sense, there is really no such thing as an academic subject. There are only academic ways of looking at things. Academic work is a mode of analysis and it can be applied to anything: foreign languages or particle physics, poetry or geology. Schools have evolved to place great emphasis on this mode of study, but it is not the subjects as such.
