Cicada shells, or exoskeletons, are so delightfully alien and creepy looking that they will fascinate many children. Our busy human brains are drawn to novelty, and these delicate bug husks are definitely novel. These things allow kids to pump into STEM topics like insects, metamorphosis, change, anatomy, and more. They also provide a chance for kids to practice being gentle and using their precision grip. Too much grip force and these things crumble.
Sourcing the shells might be a challenge. You’ll probably have to put out a loose parts alert asking friends, parents, and peers to help locate and procure them. You can also buy them online. As I write this post, I see that I could get 100+ on eBay for about $25.
