Carpet squares are much more engaging when used as classroom loose parts than as circle time seating location markers. You can use them to keep Zebulon and Angus separated while you talk about the weather and the letter of the week, but why not plop them in the classroom and see that the kids use them for?

Zebulon may toss them like Frisbees, use them to create a safe path across the room because The Floor Is Lava, try taping them together to build a clubhouse, or suggest them as bases for a game of kickball.

Angus may ride his favorite like it’s a magic carpet, or construct a sidewalk between the block area and the dramatic play area. Or maybe roll them into tubes, keep them from unrolling with a bit of masking tape, and slip them onto his arms and legs, so he can be a carpetbot.

All much more interesting and learning-rich than cirlce time seating.
