John Bowlby’s 4 Phases Of Attachment Development

This free handout looks at John Bowlby’s 4 phases of attachment development. He described attachment as a “lasting psychological connectedness between human beings,”–believing early child-caregiver bonds had a powerful impact and continued throughout life.

The 4 phases are Pre-Attachment, “Attachment In The Making”, “Clear Cut” Attachment, and Reciprocal Relationships.

Edward John Mostyn Bowlby (1907-1990) was a notable British psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, best known for his work in child development. He was the first attachment theorist. His attachment research can be traced to World War II, when he worked with children separated from their families by the war.
