Bird feeders invite kids to pay more attention to the winged wildlife flitting and fluttering about your outdoor play space. Remember, loose parts, according to Simon Nicholson, are variables in the environment with which people can engage. Feeders offer up all kinds of potential variables with which kids can engage.
Different types of feeders that dispense different types of food will attract different types of birds. All this variety creates a play space that’s both visually and auditorily interesting.

Bird Feeders And Learning
Playground feeders allow kids to bump up against a variety of learning opportunities. For example, they may hone observation and visual tracking skills, build auditory discrimination skills, and grow their vocabularies while watching feeding birds. If they’re involved in filling, cleaning, and maintaining the feeder, they have a chance to build muscle control and strength as well as practice being responsible and nurturing members of a community. Bird feeders also provide a chance for kids to bump up against a variety of STEM topics including biology, ecology, flight, construction, and nutrition just to name a few.
