This visual perception process is highly complex. In order to understand what he reads, a child must be able to connect new thoughts with things he has already learned. Then he must retrieve what he learned earlier from his memory and integrate it with the new information. So he is constantly analyzing and synthesizing, or putting things together. He must also do this in learning arithmetic, spelling and other subjects if he is to do an effective job. And the more abstract the material is, the more complex is the learning task.
