Bamboo is one of those loose parts that’s not easily accessible everywhere. Some places it grows like grass and others you have to hunt it down and ship it in. I grew up longing to get my hands on some bamboo thanks to Gilligan’s Island, so I could build a hut, car, lounge chair, and table. Boy, I’d be living the life then.
Alas, no bamboo crossed my path for the entirety of my childhood. But my dreams are still alive, I’ve recently relocated to an area where it grows and sometimes washes up on the beach. I’m stockpiling poles until I have enough to start building.
Anyway, if you have access to the stuff, it’s a loose part that can inspire a wide range of play and exploration. From making music to making forts and living tunnels, it has a lot to offer.
