Sensory integration begins in the womb as the fetus feels the movement of the mother. Lots of sensory integration needs to occur in the first year of life in order to get a child to start crawling and later walking. Children continue to integrate their senses as they age through a variety of movement and play experiences. Although all children are born with the capacity for healthy sensory integration, they must develop sensory integration by experiencing many physical challenges during childhood (Ayres 2000).
