A recent study in the United Kingdom found that children’s “independent mobility” is decreasing. In 1971, 86 percent of English primary schoolchildren were allowed to travel home from school alone. By 1990, this number had dropped markedly to 35 percent. By 2010, only 25 percent of children walked home without an adult.
