The core consists of the outer core, or the abdominals, and the inner core, the muscles that surround the hips, pelvic floor, diaphragm, and spine. Having a strong inner core provides stability for the spine and allows for good alignment and fluid movement. The inner core supports postural control and deep breathing patterns and provides a strong base from which the outer core muscles can move. The inner core keeps children upright and stable. When children don’t have good inner core strength, they have to compensate by using the more superficial outer core muscles to keep their bodies upright.
