Finding balance requires losing balance from time to time. This is natural. No baby can learn to sit up, stand, and walk without sometimes losing his balance and falling. If we accept losing balance as a necessary part of the process, perhaps it can be easier to refrain from rushing in. When your baby falls, he may be startled or surprised; he may get a small bump or even a bloody lip. He may cry because he startled, rather than hurt, himself when he fell. Be available if he wants to be picked up, but don’t assume this is what he wants. Instead it can help if you come close and narrate what you’ve seen. “You fell. That surprised you.” Trust that he’ll let you know if he wants you to pick him up or hold him.
