About Assessment
Assessment, in early learning, covers two areas. First, the assessment of children and their development. This is the “process of documenting, usually in measurable terms, knowledge, skill, attitudes, and beliefs. It is a tool or method of obtaining information from tests or other sources about the achievement or abilities of individuals.”1
The second area is assessment of programs and staff. There are many programs and strategies used to measure the quality and effectiveness of programs and individuals.
Whether measuring a child’s progress or a program’s quality, a variety of practices and tools are used. Some are much more appropriate and effective than others.
