Can you guess where I learned conflict resolution skills? It wasn’t in a classroom. It was in a large field near my neighborhood growing up. Somewhere between twelve and sixteen boys would gather after school to play baseball on that field. We would choose up sides and umpire our own game. Tempers flew as competitive spirits sprung to life. It’s a good thing we were outdoors, because we used our outside voices, if you know what I mean. We all wanted to play ball so badly, however, that we eventually learned how to resolve our conflict all by ourselves. Those lessons have paid off for me as a professional today. I’m not so sure kids are learning the same skills today.
