…adults are applauding and rewarding their kids far more today than they were a generation ago. I’m questioning whether our obsession with self-esteem is all that healthy. Kids eventually perceive those words of hyperbolic praise from adults to be hollow. They’re wary of artificial self-esteem. I see thousands of students each year lingering in the land of potential far too long, afraid to launch into the unknown and grow up. At least part of the problem is us— the adults.
