This handy handout explains 4 parenting styles. Psychologist Diana Baumrind identified 3 of these parenting styles (Authoritarian, Authoritative, and Permissive) in her 1967 study “Child Care Practices Anteceding Three Patterns of Preschool Behavior.” The fourth, Uninvolved, was added in 1983 by Eleanor Maccoby and John Martin. These styles have been extensively researched for decades. Findings identify that children benefit most from authoritative parenting and that uninvolved parenting is the least healthy.
