Benefits Of All Weather Play

  • Rain or shine, outside play promotes physical activity and all the developmental benefits that accompany it.
  • Playing in semi-harsh weather conditions gets kids out of their comfort zones and helps build resilience.
  • Such play helps develop what we’ll call Weather Sense—the understanding that weather conditions change from day to day and that accommodations must be made based on those conditions.
  • Exposure to rain, wind, snow, and other weather conditions inundate children with sensory experiences they don’t get on days with picture-perfect weather.
  • The sensory experiences offered by play in imperfect weather can help prevent and alleviate sensory processing issues.
  • Playing outside in rain, snow, and wind offers opportunities to build and hone risk assessment skills.
  • Differing weather conditions offer kids interesting and new challenges to face and problems to solve.
  • Play in inclement weather allows kids to experience their surroundings differently. Things look, sound, and feel different in varied conditions.
  • Even on overcast days, outside play allows kids to soak up vitamin D—a vitamin that contributes to bone health, supports the immune system, helps regulates mood, and plays a part in learning and memory.
  • Outside play in imperfect weather exposes kids to fresh, well-circulated air and gets them away from poorly ventilated inside conditions.
Staying inside when there’s a bit of rain or snow keeps kids from many beneficial sensory experiences.
In addition to all the developmental benefits, outside play in imperfect weather is fun.
