Toys are children’s first treasures. At first they give pleasure, stimulate interest, amuse, comfort, even teach. For centuries babies and young children were given rattles and toys to handle, chew, shake, and spin. As children developed physical and mental skills, tops and balls were time-proven toys, and dolls and small vessels were favorites for pretend play. With advancing skill and age, children engaged in play with puppets and model figures of soldiers and animals. Both poor and rich children made their own toys using sand, rags, string, sticks, and whatever scrap material was at hand.
