Throughout recorded history, as now, children played games appropriate to their stages of development. During the medieval and Renaissance period they played with small objects such as marbles and balls and even dice and chess made from various materials. Jumping, swinging, and balancing devices and “totters” or “merry totters” were used, probably referring to swings, seesaws, or spring boards.
