The standards movement has not made life pleasant for children. Teachers are so busy preparing children for tests that there is little time for projects and activities that children find exciting and meaningful, such as building things, gardening, and participating in the arts. The tests also make many children very anxious. But in today’s world children’s present interests and feelings count for little in comparison to the all-important goal of preparing them for the adult workplace.
