Experiments and brain imaging technology show that acting charitably stimulates parts of the brain associated not with personal reward but related to perceiving the needs of others. In other words, we are stirred to act selflessly when we recognize our shared humanity, not by any conscious or unconscious desire to feel good about it. Other studies show that acts of generosity activate an older part of the brain, suggesting that altruism is so basic to who we are that we are likely to react this way even without thinking about it. It may be that much of the strife and unhappiness we see in the world today has to do with suppressing this very natural part of ourselves.
