Children develop fine motor strength by interacting with small objects or performing tasks that provide resistance. For babies, crawling strengthens and develops the arches in the hands, later needed to grasp small objects. As with the gross motor skills, children need ample time to use the hands to explore their surroundings. They need opportunities to pick things up, turn them around in their hands, open them up, release them, and then move on to the next thing.
