Quote

Rewards, bribes and grades can’t provide the sort of motivation that children find in their own increasing competence. There is intrinsic satisfaction to be found in achievement when it results from meaningful efforts. What provides that meaning varies from person to person and can change over time. It may be a desire for independence, or the longing to strengthen relationships. It may be competition or cooperation. Whatever elements work best, the child who follows the stimulus of his or her own interests is likely to meet with success. And we know that success tends to breed more success.
