There seems to be a misunderstanding about risk in the United States, not just in early childhood programs but in our society in general. There is no distinction made between hazards and risks. Joan Almon (2013), author of Adventure: The Value of Risk in Children’s Play, defines hazards as dangers that a child cannot easily see or predict. A risk is something that a child can see and can perform an assessment thereof.
