It is your intent that matters. If your compliment is intended to control behavior, it is merely another form of manipulation. Have you ever had anyone rave on about you or your deeds, and you knew he was doing it to get something from you? No one likes to be manipulated. If your only intent is to show appreciation, recognize persistence, or acknowledge a deed well done, and nothing more, your compliment is sincere.
