Resolving conflict requires complex social skills. Kids aren’t born with social skills ; they need practice. That means plenty of time for spontaneous, unstructured human interaction. Play gives the best practice. Free play gives kids countless opportunities to “bump into” other kids and experience conflict. The more your child practices— when to speak up, what words to say, how to find the courage to assert herself— the more naturally she will be able to navigate the complex web of social relationships.
