When older children explain concepts to younger ones, they often articulate ideas that are at the edge of their own understanding. For example, the eight-year-old who explained the steps in bathing a baby to her two-year-old sister, in their doll play, may have been putting those steps into words, and thinking about them in a structured way, for the first time. Likewise, children helping others learn to read or to use numbers in the context of play are most likely making certain phonetic or numeric concepts clearer to themselves as they explain them and answer the younger ones’ questions.
