Artificial Maturity | Quote 00174

As kids become adults, they need for adults to both nudge and release. It’s a little like teaching your child to ride a bike. This act is a difficult but necessary tandem of offering guidance and letting go. Failing at either one of these can delay the child’s mastery of the bike. As the training wheels are removed and they learn to ride on their own, children need parents and teachers to provide these two paradoxical gifts— support and freedom—while reading the needs of the children at any given moment. A shaky kid on a bike needs both of these, and realizing that this is what their child will always require is difficult to navigate for parents.
