By all accounts, psychological distress is now rampant on college campuses. Colleges are experiencing record demand for counseling and intensive support services from students with serious psychological problems. The epidemic of mental health problems on campus is new, and it is prime evidence that this generation is breaking down in ways that previous generations did not. Their troubles take a variety of forms: anxiety and depression—two faces of the same coin—binge drinking and substance abuse, eating disorders, self-mutilation and other manifestations of self-disconnection.
