Synopsis
At Mansfield Elementary in Connecticut, principal Kate McCoy transformed the school into a place of genuine joy with purposeful play-based learning.
Guided by state encouragement for playful learning, the school integrated hands-on activities—like outdoor explorations, LEGO spaces, and embedded academics—replacing much traditional seatwork.
The payoff: happier students, including many from diverse backgrounds, alongside top-tier results—leading the state in math (SPI 75.5%) and earning repeated School of Distinction honors.
A clear reminder that prioritizing play and joy in elementary school can elevate both engagement and achievement.
