Whether stacking blocks to reach new heights or climbing the playground’s apple tree, the concept of Up is a loose part that encourages children to think vertically, explore spatial relationships, challenge themselves physically, and engage in imaginative play.
The exploration of vertical space with the loose part Up challenges children to consider balance, stability, and structure, promoting cognitive development as they experiment with different ways to elevate their play experiences.
Remember, loose parts don’t have to be physical objects. Simon Nicholson, author of The Theory Of Loose Parts, mentions abstract concepts as loose parts. Playing with concepts usually requires manipulating physical objects. In the case of Up, physical loose parts, such as blocks, kites, stairs, ladders, playground climbing structures, balls, and more, help children explore the concept.
