Social referencing relies on a child’s ability to read facial expressions (which is why children on the autistic spectrum fail to use it as a cue) and once a child has reached this stage of development they are likely to copy the reaction they see on the face of their carer. Infants not only use social referencing to establish boundaries – it can also lead to establishing how they will react in similar situations. For example, a mother’s horrified scream and subsequent fuss when her child falls over may establish a similar pattern of behaviour on the part of the child whenever this occurs again.
